  16. South Carolina. If recording impresario Berry Gordy was the 
  17. brains of the Motown sound, Johnson was its original soul. His 
  18. 1959 hit, Come to Me, was the earliest example of what would 
  19. become the universally recognized, best-selling Motown sound: 
  20. gospel backgrounds fused with rhythm-and-blues and a white-friendly 
  21. theme. Subsequent Gordy-Johnson collaborations included Top 
  22. 10 hits You Got What It Takes and I Love the Way You Love.
