- South Carolina. If recording impresario Berry Gordy was the
- brains of the Motown sound, Johnson was its original soul. His
- 1959 hit, Come to Me, was the earliest example of what would
- become the universally recognized, best-selling Motown sound:
- gospel backgrounds fused with rhythm-and-blues and a white-friendly
- theme. Subsequent Gordy-Johnson collaborations included Top
- 10 hits You Got What It Takes and I Love the Way You Love.
